It is a kaupapa youth alcohol and other drug residential rehabilitation service. What does that mean? Te Waireka is a health service that is funded by six DHB’s which are listed below These are Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay, Mid-Central, Kapiti Coast, Hutt Valley and Good Health Wanganui. Young people within these catchment areas are able to access our service for free. Te Waireka is designed for young people of all cultures aged from 14-19 years of age who are willing to address their alcohol and other drug issues and associated behaviour. Both Maori and western models of care are utilised to provide a holistic approach to service delivery.
The programme is eight weeks long with a possibility of extending treatment if necessary once an assessment has been completed. The programme consists of four stages
What happens there?
Throughout the week and on weekends a life-skill programme is introduced. The Clients/Rangatahi reside at the homestead which has a separate girls and boys wing a large dining and living area 3 separate bathrooms and an outside games room, pool, tennis and basketball court. The outlying areas include areas for such activities as sweat-lodge, bone and stone carving, harakeke (flax weaving) and outdoor activity. There is also a large vege garden, chook houses, pig pen, and playing fields. To the back of the house is a meandering stream with lush greenery and a peaceful serenity garden that is surrounded by stately Totara trees and the native bird the Tui can be heard at regular intervals. How can I receive help from this service? Te Waireka has experienced Staff who are well equipped to work with youth and youth issues. The qualifications of the team vary from time to time however essentially staff are qualified alcohol and other drug (AOD) practitioners and residential support staff. Step 1-
Step 2- An AOD assessment filled out by the counsellor needs to accompany an application to attend or referral form this must be filled out by an AOD counsellor Step 3- The forms will go through a Te Waireka assessment process during this time or even beforehand you should receive an information pack and a phone-call or meeting time to be interviewed by a Te Waireka staff member to ascertain motivation Step 4- Await confirmation of acceptance or if you have been placed on a waiting list please do not be disheartened if the latter occurs as Te Waireka will provide materials to prepare you for entry onto the programme The importance of whanau days is crucial to the ongoing improvement in the Rangatahi’s treatment plan.
